FAQs - Cervigard collar

Does the chin pad have a function.
The chin pad should be adjusted to be below the chin. Its function it to connect the right and left sides of the Cervigard collar and keep the head level during rearward translation of the head to be aligned with the C7 vertebra and shoulders.

How far along the two side tracks do I start at?
Depends on your age and degree of forward head posture. Older patients should start slowly with the Cervigard adjusted to comfort in the beginning of the track. Younger users who are under 40 yrs of age can be more aggressive and adjust the tracks 2/3 the way or more. See our video on this on our web site.

Why do I have to put my hair up?
To avoid getting your hair tangled in the track wheels when adjusting the Cervigard track pressure

Why do I have to recline back approximately 10 degrees in a sitting position while wearing the Cervigard Collar?
This allows gravity to pull your head rearward and assist the Cervigard collar in correcting the forward head posture.

If the cheek pads are too close to my eyes what should I do?
Move your head upward until your eye sockets are not touching the cheek pads. Make sure the cheek pad column is in the lowest setting.

What if the collar feels too tight, I have a large girth!
You may need the large size Cervigard. It’s for larger girth and taller patients with longer necks.

How often should I use the Cervigard?
You should use the Cervigard collar daily for 20 minutes in a seated and slightly reclined posture. Do this for 6 weeks and as needed afterward.

Can I use the Cervigard less than 20 minutes if it’s too much pressure?
While it’s not optimal, yes you can and increase the time slowly thereafter. This is not a race. Take your time! The Cervigard will gradually correct your forward head posture and thus reduce the neck strain that causes pain and stiffness.

I have had neck surgery that has not relieved my pain. Will the Cervigard help me!
You should not use the Cervigard at this time! Consult your healthcare doctor with this question. Some patients have so much damage that correcting the head and neck alignment is not possible.

I have had neck surgery and still have mild discomfort, will my doctor let me use this technology.
We have successfully helped many patients with surgical treatment. That said this is a question for your doctor. You must be under supervision by a healthcare physician if you have had surgery!

My child is 10 years old and has Forward Head Posture, what age can I start him on the Cervigard.
Children need this technology if there is obvious FHP. They must be supervised to be sure they are using it correctly. Follow all instructions and directions. Be sure to explain to your child why they need the Cervigard collar. Forward head posture will cause postural deformities and may cause nerve and muscular dysfunction resulting in neck symptoms.

My grandparent has severe forward head posture. I can’t get the Cervigard collar to adjust all the way back on the track. What should I do?
Have the older senior person recline in a sitting position as directed. Next, place the Cervigard collar on them and adjust the track to comfort level only. This may only be on the 4th notch from the front of the track. This may seem too mild a setting but it isn’t for the 70 yr and older groups. They only need a slight FHP correction to see benefit. Many only correct a half of an inch and it’s enough to relief the mechanical strain on the neck musculature and provide relief.

How soon can I expect relief from neck pain?
Most users experience relief after the 3rd to 6th week. However, many users experience relief in the first few days as the overstretched neck and head posture resumes its normal alignment! If you do not get relief after this time period, please consult a healthcare physician for a medical evaluation.

If in a car accident, can I use the Cervigard without doctors supervision?
Minor accidents or fender bender mild collisions with little damage usually cause minimal injury. Cervigard can be used provided there is no pain when wearing it.
However if in an high impact collision with significant damage to the vehicles this needs medical supervision. You may have a fracture or significant disc injury that may need emergency treatment prior to any help the Cervigard can provide. The use of the Cervigard in this case must be with the supervision of your doctor.

Some people are saying that this helps headaches. How can this help headaches?
While the Cervigard was not designed to treat headaches the correction of forward head posture relieves tension on the neck structures and nerve tissues. This may be related to any headache relief.
The cheek pads create a lot of pressure on my cheek bones. Is this normal?
Yes, the pressure is normal. This is called the “PUSH ZONE”. It aligns the forward positioned head backward to line up over the shoulders. That is normal alignment. The forward head posture is causing the majority of the neck pain and other symptoms! If the cheek pressure is too much for you then simply reduce the track pressure by moving the track adjustment knobs forward a notch or two. This is a gradual correction process so take it at your pace.
